Rough Trade Release Heroes 1976-2016 (Volume 1), Marking Their 40th Anniversary

Today brings the release of Rough Trade’s comprehensive 40 track compilation, marking the 40 years in which the world renowned indie label and record shop have been creating, moulding, and selling the best alternative music over the decades. This compilation double CD is a set of Rough Trade’s favourite songs about other musicians, all of which were released in the 40 years since they first opened the front door in 1976, and features the likes of The Fall and Psychic TV, to Radiohead, to Daniel Johnson and Pavement, to Mogwai, Fat White Family, and Sun Kil Moon. 40 years, 40 heroes.

Tributes to Debbie Harry, The Beatles, Elvis, Prince, Nick Drake, Frank Sinatra and Bowie of course make up the majority of the first disc, but equally, commendations of Snoop Dog and the Wu Tang Clan from Neil Hamburger and Allo’ Darlin’ retrospectively make it onto the compilation, as does remembrance of Elliot Smith in the words of Joan as Police Woman, and of Joe Meek through the sound of Matmos.

“Each of these songs is a window to a room in the minds of artists, a room reserved for contemplating the art of others, be they influences, obsessions, contemporaries or fantasies, lovers, haters, emetics, madmen, villains or heroes.” – Ed Zed, Rough Trade New York
