Corri Spencer’s Fuzzy Lo-Fi Nostalgia

Based in Phoenix, solo artist Corri Spencer might only be 20, but his woozy, off-kilter fuzz pop reveals an old soul hidden in a young man’s body. ‘Hey There Paper Boy’ is his first demo since his debut EP Waiting For Elle and it goes back to the “cum-stained hoodies and rum in bowls” of his suburban youth- as described so charmingly in ‘Melancholy Boy’- but this time focusing on his teenage paper round.

Over a gentle, plodding guitar riff and minimal percussion his gravelly vocals bizarrely call to mind the country twang of Johnny Cash, the lo-fi recording casting a haze of summery nostalgia. In his own personal narrative he captures the universal tedium felt by all teenagers in their part-time jobs; “It ain’t fun/But being broke is even fuckin’ worse”
